City Wall
Performance with Merlijn van der Hoeven 2015 pulled glass, pieces of a brick wall, mobile studio photography - Cees Wouda and Sjoerd Amidst the rising influx of refugees and the walls erected along the edges of Europe, artists Krista Israel and Merlijn van der Hoeven created City Wall. Over the course of the 33-hour Art Marathon BluePrint in Amersfoort (NL), they transformed a mobile glass studio into a site of endurance and reflection. Thread by thread, they drew glowing strands of glass and built a fragile wall—transparent, delicate, and tense. The structure stood as a paradox: a barrier that at once separates and reveals, evoking both the promise and the fragility of freedom. At the end of the performance, the wall was deliberately destroyed. Its disappearance echoed the impermanence of borders and the futility of walls, leaving behind the lingering question of what divides us, and what might still connect us. |
